About this deal

You should not use this medicine if you are currently taking a type of medicine called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), or have taken one of these medicines in the last 14 days. MAOIs include the antidepressants phenelzine, tranylcypromine, isocarboxazid and moclobemide, and the anti-Parkinson's medicines selegiline and rasagiline. This is because the combination of phenylephrine with these medicines could cause a dangerous increase in blood pressure (hypertensive crisis). For the cheapest option, seek out own-brand or generic painkillers. Supermarkets and discount stores are often cheapest, and branded versions can cost nearly five times as much. Dr Alison Cave said: 'we would like to reassure patients and parents that if you or someone under the age of 16 have used these sachets and have suffered no ill effects, there is no cause for concern.

Adults and adolescents aged 16 years and over should take one sachet every four to six hours as necessary, up to a maximum of four sachets in 24 hours. Find out more about which painkiller to choose for different types of aches and pains in our full painkillers guide The systemic availability is subject to first-pass metabolism and varies with dose between 70% and 90%. The drug is rapidly and widely distributed throughout the body and is eliminated from plasma with a T1 /2 of approximately 2 hours. The major metabolites are glucuronide and sulphate conjugates (>80%) which are excreted in urine. Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects known to be associated with paracetamol and phenylephrine. Just because a side effect is stated here doesn't mean that all people using Lemsip max cold & flu will experience that or any side effect. In a study of healthy controls fasted overnight the T max for an equivalent product compared to two tablets of standard paracetamol was 20 minutes versus 35 minutes (p=0.0865). However, the speed to achieve 10 μg/ml for the product was faster than a standard paracetamol (17 minutes versus 30 minutes).Cold and flu sachets are much more expensive per unit than capsules but are often stronger, and many people like having a soothing hot drink while they're feeling ill, rather than having to take tablets. They don't tend to contain caffeine either.

Caution should be taken when paracetamol is used concomitantly with flucloxacillin as concurrent intake has been associated with high anion gap metabolic acidosis, especially in patients with risks factors (see section 4.4)

Paracetamol reduces fever by affecting an area of the brain that regulates our body temperature (the hypothalamic heat-regulating center). The safety of this medicine during pregnancy and lactation has not been established but in view of a possible association of foetal abnormalities with first trimester exposure to phenylephrine, the use of the product during pregnancy should be avoided. In addition, because phenylephrine may reduce placental perfusion, the product should not be used in patients with a history of preeclampsia. Paracetamol is thought to relieve pain by reducing the production of prostaglandins in the brain and spinal cord. It works to bring down a fever by affecting an area of the brain that regulates our body temperature (the hypothalamic heat-regulating center). This stops you feeling hot or shivery.
