About this deal

S Pen users, meanwhile, will appreciate Air Command, which is activated when the nib of the S Pen is held just above the surface of the screen. It acts as an ever-present toolbox that lets you jump to one of a number of forms of writing or note-taking, and what’s more, it allows for additional shortcuts too. The oleophobic coating which covers the 8in display is top notch, too, and any greasy fingerprints that build up can be wiped off with almost magical ease. It’s also highly efficient at resisting water: at a raised angle, liquids run off display with lightning speed and, being IP68 waterproof, you’d be safe using it in a rainstorm. And Samsung has added a couple of extra outdoors-y display features – Glove Touch and Wet Touch mode – which alter the screen’s sensitivity so it can be used more easily in cold or wet conditions. Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2: Performance and battery life The Galaxy Tab Active 2 comes with the innovative, easy-to-use, and water-resistant S Pen, providing a simple and effective way to work on the move. The S Pen looks and feels just like a typical pen and enables you to create and capture content digitally and with minimal fuss. It's an effortless way to jot down notes and sketch out ideas, access apps and capture customer signatures.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 runs on last year’s Android Nougat 7.1.1 operating system with Samsung’s own launcher software overlaid. If you’re already using Android 8 on your smartphone you’ll find that Android 7.1.1 has fewer emoji options – but other than that, I had no issues with the OS or the user interface – it’s just like using a (really) big Samsung phone. Samsung Mobile always tries to delivers the most advanced and appealing smartphone into the market. Samsung’s preference for AMOLED panels is another plus, with great contrast and punchy colours too, provided you’re not looking for accuracy from the viewing experience. If you need a bulletproof, all weather tablet, this thing is a bargain compared to the comparable Panasonic Toughbook or Dell equivalent and it will serve you well. It's a tool for getting work done in the field, not a toy. If you want an AMOLED screen with 5 million pixels that will play the most demanding games in the Play Store at 60 fps, then this is a poor choice. If you're used to an Apple iPad, you'll want to temper your expectations for screen resolution, graphics quality and sound. ADAPTABLE S PEN — IP68-Certified Samsung S Pen gives you the precision you need to write or tap no matter the conditions Actual user memory will vary depending on the mobile phone operator and may change after software upgrades are performed. Its ruggedised customisations are unquestionably more than cosmetic and the added S Pen functionality make it a great tool for both adventures, creatives and as an educational tool.

The Tab Active 2 isn’t just a tough-looking slate, it’s both IP68 and MIL-STD-810G certified, meaning you needn’t worry about it falling into a puddle, mud or against hard ground. This should come as no surprise considering the term ‘ruggedised’ is involved, but as 8-inch slates go, the Active 2 is decidedly chunky. Despite this, it’s still narrow enough to clutch comfortably in one hand and light enough to wield for extended periods of time.

Launching on Android 7.1.1 and more recently upgraded to Android 8.1 Oreo, the Active 2 also lags behind on the software side too, at least on paper. Usually, I’d berate an Android device for opting for hardware-based navigation controls in 2018 but on the Active 2 their presence makes total sense. Paired with the tablet’s increased touchscreen sensitivity toggle, the buttons make for far easier operation should you be wearing gloves or have wet hands; ideal if you see yourself taking this tablet on a camping trip to colder climbs.

Been using an LG-v530 LTE 8" tablet in my vehicle for Spotify, navigation (GMaps), TorquePro, etc. It died a slow death as the battery swelled to point screen began popping off, case swollen, but otherwise still working. As an active user of the Tab Active3, I looked around for other versions that might fit the bill. The touchscreen is as fluid and responsive as you’d expect from a Samsung device, and the stylus accuracy is superb. When free-drawing, the screen goes into palm-rejection mode to prevent your hands triggering unnecessary pen strokes. Expect two to three days of general use on a single charge (the battery is rated for 45 hours of mixed usage), with a recharge by way of the in-box 10W charger replenishing power in just over 2.5 hours.

If you dunk the tablet, you need to remove the case to dry it off, and wait for the "moisture in the USB port" alert to go away. I waited about 40 minutes for it to go away before speeding it up with a few blasts from a commercial hand dryer. A rubber plug attachment would have been nice too. Upgrading from the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active2 to the Galaxy Tab Active3 will totally depend on the price difference and if you can truly make use of the enhanced features. Battery time is based on our own laboratory measurements, and may vary depending on factors such as device settings, usage patterns and operating conditions. RUGGED RELIABILITY-Heavy-duty tech that gets the job done. Built-in features include an accelerometer, gyroscope, GPS and geomagnetic sensor. Note: for all Wi-Fi models, GPS technology will only activate when connected to a Wi-Fi network Just be aware that as with any water-resistant Samsung smartphone or tablet, the Active 2 will warn of “moisture in the USB port” after taking a dunk and will need to be thoroughly dried out before accepting a charge again.
