About this deal

We continue to learn how the scoring software behaves. One critically important change is that, when we run a single-winner event with an arrow-switch (such as the Club Championship), the arrow-switch rounds occur at the beginning of the evening, not the end. There are advantages to this: we don't run the risk of the director forgetting the arrow-switch towardsthe end of an exhausting evening, and all the pairs' scores are melded into one league table as soon as we have completed a couple of rounds. GW said that he thought it important that the Club state what complexity of bidding conventions it would accept. He said he believed that the Level 4 designation (which the Club currently uses) could lead to the membership facing too many complicated systems, and that the Club should adopt Level 3. He said that Level 3 is basically the same as the "novice" Level 2, but with the 2 ♦ Multi also permitted. See https://www.ebu.co.uk/documents/laws-and-ethics/blue-book/blue-book-2019.pdf for a full description of the various levels. The commmittee voted unanimously to adopt Level 3 for the Club for the time being. The duplimater duplimates 33 boards and produces around 20 copies of the 'answer sheet' each week at home (using the club's machine and printer), and brings them to the club. For performing that task, he or she pays no table money on the evening. I favour an early restart, being aware that some may be nervous and that attendance figures may be low initially. However, when people see that the survival rate is no worse than normal, more will feel comfortable to come. <Ⓜ#2> I don’t have any great suggestions other than having online Claygate Bridge Club tournaments but that would involve you in a lot of work! <Ⓜ#9>

The director runs the evening, and pays no table money. Members must always respect his or her decisions. Is a cashless-only system possible? Yes, there are cheap portable credit card readers available which buskers use. And some clubs have introduced monthly and annual table money subscriptions. <Ⓜ#7> I’d be in favour of opening asap. I’m sure that people would be sensible about social distancing. <Ⓜ#1> All members of the existing committee said they were happy to be nominated for the next season, starting immediately after the March 2020 AGM. But there was a general view that new blood would be welcomed; anyone interested could be co-opted onto the committee right away. 11. Any Other Business JM brought up the topic of a defibrillator, as all organisations should be aware of where the nearest device is located. 21-4Ⓐ12 GW to speak to Day Centre Manager. 11. Date of Next Meeting We have booked the hall at Oxshott Village Centre for Monday afternoons starting at 1.30pm - and there is NO CHARGE for the first month (November).

The Club will be happy to pay the course fees of any member who would like to attend the courses below, provided you commit to having a go at directing at Claygate. BridgePal scoring is a technical job which requires some competence on both the PC and the Android handset. If the scoring system's reliability could be improved, it is believed members would be less reluctant to come forward to help. Aspiring scorers should be encouraged to help alongside the established scoring team. Many thanks also to the previous committee, who have guided this club out of difficult circumstances. I particularly want to pay tribute to Jaime. I'm not aware of the evolution of the club in the 17 years before I joined, but my belief is that no-one did more for the club, particularly on the technical side, than Jaime. One point of course is if we leave too long, may risk migration to other clubs and would be interesting to see what other clubs plan to do. <Ⓜ#3> There is not usually a fee for this, though we can charge a reasonable fee based on the administrative cost of providing the information if a request is manifestly unfounded or excessive or for requests for further copies of the same information. That, as per clause 12(a) of the Constitution, membership fees for next year would be due to be paid by 31st January 2022. Claygate bridge club in Surrey is a fantastic place where you can bump into similar like minded people who want to get together and push a few playing cards around the green felt. I suspect more than 90% of us will have been vaccinated by the time the Club re-opens. If a list of vaccinated members is kept by the Club, it should be reviewed periodically as booster (or variant) jabs are given. <Ⓜ#7>
